Wow, with a title like that how can this be a boring blog?
Recently I got into my first ever car accident.
Make that; Recently I crashed my parents car.
So I recently turned sixteen, and even though I'm completely able to, out of pure laziness I still don't have my Learner's permit, and don't get me started on my license. But that hasn't stopped me and dad from going out driving on Sundays in the HCC parking lot. I know how to drive. Really.
So, a few days ago when I was sitting in the van with Gabe, driving back from Grandpa Earl's to gramma and papa's house I started harassing my dad about letting me drive. I was partially joking, because, there is literally no one driving out in Peterborough. It's not like I could do any serious damage right? Finally, dad relented and he got into to the backseat with my three and a half year old brother, and took the driver's seat with mom next to me. Note: This was the first time mom drove anywhere with me.
Anyway, I started cruising along, way easier then I would have done if I had been out in the Civic (stick shift). The van was my first official time driving an automatic. (There was another time but in light of recent events it 'never happened'.) I reached Gramma and Grampa Knox's house without event, and was turning into their narrow driveway when things began to go amiss.
I may or may not have been a little distracted imagining my grandparents faces as I pulled smoothly into their driveway. Suddenly I was snapped out of my reverie by mom screaming;
"ANNA STOP!" I looked up in time to see that I was missing the driveway. So I reverted to that ancient trick: I closed my eyes. Because, of course, if you cannot see the situation, it will go away. I also braked. At least, I thought I braked. But in my moment of panic I forgot where the brake was.... and hit the gas.
In my defense, I would have been fine, if I had been driving a stick shift. My left foot was off the imagined clutch. Finally by some miracle, I hit the brake. We shuddered to a stop in the empty field that separates the Knox property from the neighbors.
I looked up at mom, shaking. Then I giggled, nervously. Mom let out the same nervous laugh. Then we were both laughing, an inch away from hysteria. My dad breathed a sigh of relief and my brother screamed out;
"THAT WAS AWESOME!" Ever the little boy. Mom and dad got out to survey the damage. I shakily unbuckled myself and got out of the car. My legs barely held me up. I stared in horror at the fender of the car... because I was pretty sure the front bumper did not belong behind it. My face felt wet, and I looked up searching for rain. There wasn't a cloud in the beautiful Utah sky. I realized then that I was crying. I sobbed again. My grandparents came running down from the porch because; of course they had been sitting on the porch with my sisters and had witnessed the whole thing. I knew that I would never, ever, as long as I lived.... live this one down.
I'm sorry Anna! I hope everything is alright! Driving is full of mistakes. *hugs anna* Gabe made giggle.
