My Stone Friend

Gargoyle Bookend
rough beneath my hands
the smooth curve
of great bat wings.
You curl in on yourself
hunched in a friendly pose.
Your talons are neat,
your claws are clean.
Oversized ears sprout from your head
like a second set of wings.
Wrinkled forehead, befuddled eyes;
even simple thoughts confuse you.
Large protruding snout
a silly, vapid smile greets me:
“Hello friend,”
